The Art of Adaptation: Collaboration Across Literature, Music, Film

Novelist, Screenwriter and Lyricist Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ will be joined by Filmmaker, Screenwriter and Lyricist, Joanna Lipper, and Music Producer and Songwriter, Michael Bakare. They will discuss their work in progress on a musical film adaptation of Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀’s internationally-acclaimed novel, Stay With Me, currently in development.

Described by the Sunday Times as affecting and powerful, Stay With Me, details the unravelling of a marriage against the social and political turbulence of 1980s Nigeria. It is a story of the fragility of married love, the undoing of family, the power of grief, and the all-consuming bonds of brotherhood. It is a tale about the desperate attempts we make to save ourselves, and those we love, from heartbreak.

Set during Nigeria’s transition from military dictatorship to civilian rule, this epic, historical family drama is a collaboration with Nigeria’s top talent. Collaborators will discuss the theory and practice of developing this film and its original soundtrack with Nigeria’s leading artists, offering insight into Nigeria’s film and music industries through the lens of this work-in-progress.
